Summer has ended and we no longer know everything that our children are doing during the day. School has started and we long to hear what went on during the hours we weren’t with them. What did they learn? What did they read? What did you choose to do during independent work time? What made the day great? You have all these questions right? Your sweet child/children get(s) in the car after a long day and the dialogue looks something like this.
Mom-Hey! How was your day?
Child-Fine
Mom-What did you learn?
Child-Stuff, a lot, nothing really–I’m sure the list can go on. Ella used to say-Can I have a snack? I have no clue where that came from. Ha!
Mom-What did you do work on today?
Ok….I know you get what I mean. Haven’t we all seen it or heard it from either our children or another child.
Don’t we long to have our children invite us into their day? Don’t we want to feel a part even when we are not with them.
There was a time that I had a conversation like the one above with my daughter. She would get in the car and I wouldn’t turn on music or give her a toy until she could tell me something about her day. Some of you are thinking she is 3! That is fine, but I don’t want her to grow up thinking that was the norm. Each day I did that, I found that it became more and more inauthentic. So….I tried a new approach. I started telling her about my day. I always start with Jad and I missed you today. This is what Jad and I did while you were at school. I tell her everything. I (being a teacher) have learned that if you model for kids they seem to grasp it much faster then if you just told them.
This past Friday, Ella got in the car and our conversation went like this.
Ella-Mom, Guess what we did at school today?
Me-What?!?
Ella- I tied ties, Did you know that T starts with t-t-t. I also got to work with gears. It was so cool! Do you know what a gear is? Mom, Look at my folder I made a flower book. Do you know what a pedicel is? That is the part that you hold. When you pick a flower you know? Mom, I played Jake and the Never land pirates at recess with Makayla, Anabel, and Matthew. We had fun.
Me-Wow Ella it sounds like you had a great day today. I didn’t know that the stem of a flower was called a pedicel? I was about to say something when Ella interrupted me with….
Ella- Mom, What did you and Jad do today?
As I began to tell her about our day, she would make comments like- cool, that’s good, way to go Jad, etc. Then she followed up with “Mom, It sounds like you and Jad had a great day.”
Hopefully for us, this will be the norm. As the eldest, she is setting the tone for her brother (and other future siblings). I found myself thinking about what it would look like hearing 3-4 daily recaps. I hope that one day I will experience such a blessing.
“What did you do today?” Here are a few more ideas for talking about the school day.

Sometimes you have to be more specific. Jamie, from Hands on as we grow shares a great blog.
